You're at the edge of the Centro Histórico
The Palacio de Bellas Artes stands where Mexico City's historic centre meets the Alameda, which makes it easy to turn a single evening performance into a full day out. Almost everything worth seeing in the old city is within a walkable radius, and the Bellas Artes Metro station is right at the door if you'd rather not walk it all.
Alameda Central and the Torre Latinoamericana
The Palacio faces the Alameda Central, the oldest public park in the Americas and a pleasant place to start. Directly across the avenue rises the Torre Latinoamericana, whose observation deck gives one of the best panoramas of the valley — a good way to get your bearings on the city before the show, and to see the Palacio's tiled dome from above.
More art within a block
If the murals inside the Palacio leave you wanting more, the Museo Nacional de Arte (Munal) is a block away, and the Museo Franz Mayer and the tiled Casa de los Azulejos are close by too. This concentration of galleries and historic interiors is exactly why the area around Bellas Artes rewards arriving early rather than turning up just before curtain.
Walk to the Zócalo
Head east from the Palacio and in about ten minutes you reach the Zócalo, one of the largest city squares in the world, ringed by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the excavated Templo Mayor. Pairing the square with the performance gives you both the ceremonial heart of the old city and its grandest theatre in a single day.
Timing it with the show
