One choreographer's idea, 1952
Amalia Hernández founded the Ballet Folklórico de México in 1952. A trained dancer and choreographer, she set out to do something more than reproduce village dances: she researched Mexico's regional traditions and reshaped them for the proscenium stage, building theatrical productions with costume, live music and large-ensemble choreography that could hold a house the size of Bellas Artes.
From eight dancers to a national company
The company began small — around eight performers — and grew quickly, reaching roughly fifty dancers by the end of the 1950s. That scale is part of what you see on stage today: individual numbers can run from a couple of dancers to more than thirty-five, letting the programme move between intimate regional pieces and full-stage spectacle across a single evening.
Mexico's cultural ambassador
In 1959 the company officially represented Mexico at the Pan American Games in Chicago, and it went on to tour the United States and more than eighty countries. Decades of international touring are the reason the Bellas Artes calendar has gaps — when the company is abroad, the home performances pause — and also why it carries the reputation it does when it is in residence.
What 'folklórico' means here
Folklórico in this context is not raw folk dance but a staged, choreographed art form: Hernández's interpretations of traditions from across Mexico — the jarabe of Jalisco, the sones of Veracruz, dances rooted in Mesoamerican ritual — presented as a curated theatrical survey. Understanding that framing is the difference between watching a series of dances and reading an evening-long portrait of a country.
